How to open Dashcode on Mac the first time
When opening Dashcode for the first time, macOS may show this warning:
"Dashcode" is damaged and can't be opened. You should eject the disk image.
The app is not damaged and it is not a virus. This message appears because the app has not yet gone through Apple's paid notarization. You only need to allow it once, and it takes less than 1 minute.
Step 1 — Install in Applications
- Double-click the .dmg file you downloaded.
- Drag the Dashcode icon to the Applications folder.
- Eject the disk: in Finder, click the eject button next to "Dashcode" or drag the disk to the Trash.
Do not open the app from inside the .dmg. Install it in Applications first, which is exactly what the “eject disk image” message is asking for.
Step 2 — Allow the app once
- Open Terminal: press Cmd + Space, type Terminal and press Enter.
- Copy and paste the command below and press Enter:
xattr -cr /Applications/Dashcode.appNo message appears on screen. This is normal and means it worked. Now open Dashcode normally from Launchpad or Applications.
xattr -cr with a trailing space and drag the Dashcode icon into the Terminal window. The path fills in automatically. Then press Enter. If “Operation not permitted” appears or a password is requested
Use the administrator permission version. It will ask for your Mac password; nothing appears while typing, which is normal. Type it and press Enter.
sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Dashcode.appNotes
- You only need to do this once. After that, Dashcode opens normally.
- Automatic app updates continue to work normally.
- Right-click Open and “Open Anyway” in System Settings usually do not appear for the “damaged” error. The reliable way is the Step 2 command.
